Graphic designer in need of an iMac?

Monday, March 19th, 2012

I’m a graphic designer graduated in 2011. Had to leave the big city because I could no longer afford staying there. Had to come back and stay with parents in a small town where jobs are hard to come by, especially graphic design jobs. During my finals at school in my last semester, my PC computer crashed and the computer failed to start. With no money, I gave up the computer, which was less than a year old, and sold it for scraps so that I could afford food and a train fare for a few days.

When I came to my parent’s state to live with them, I decided to work retail because I couldn’t do any freelance without a computer. My retail experience was short-lived due to a health issue that began resurfacing and I was also becoming unhappy at the company because of pay cuts. I was left with little money during my short stay.

I would like to initiate my graphic design career, at least doing freelance in the meantime until I can get a good portfolio together to get hired by an agency, but unfortunately I didn’t even come close to making enough money to buy myself a keyboard from working retail.

This time I want to buy an iMac and prevent the issues I had before with my two previous PC’s when I do heavy graphic work. For now, I have to settle browsing the internet at a neighbor’s house using his smartphone to look for info.

I’m afraid that if I go back to retail, my health issues will impede my job again. It is a physical activity limitation that I have due to muscular atrophy. In the state I live in now, most people get jobs as medical receptionists, medical assistant, restaurant or retail. For the medical field, you must have experience and/or a related degree/certificate (they require it even for reception front desk work at clinics/hospitals). Although I don’t have the experience for these office jobs, I have tried applying and have not been hired yet. It has been a year now.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can earn enough money to buy myself an iMac desktop without having to go back to retail? I was even thinking about entering sweepstakes and see if I got lucky and won an iMac.

You can save money buying a Mac mini instead, it provides similar performance when connected to cheaper aftermarket monitors, keyboard and mouse. (you do have to buy a separate monitor adapter cable) you won’t even have to cast aside a lame 1 button mouse (a mini comes with none).

You can save another $250 or so taking your chances with a used late model mini (look for system 10.6.8) http://www.powermax.com/parts/code/PM_CU_MM_IN

In your situation you probably can’t afford to be so picky, a cheap PC might be 1/2 the expense, the cost of legitimate software is probably more than a cheap computer, you can find poor photoshop alternative for free, like Gimp.

There is alternative online work that would still require some sort of computer:

Although I have limited direct experience with the worker side of it, I am always suggesting the one looks into freelance marketplace sites as a way to earn money more immediately than tackling some online business scheme, these include elance.com, freelancer.com and odesk.com, while more geared for technicians, you also can earn about $5 for writing a 450 word article for a web site, while there is worldwide competition, a native English writer has a big advantage. There is usually no sign up cost for workers, employers pay a percentage to the sites, to see how non technical some of the short term jobs can get you might look through the Anything Goes section of the Freelancer job listings.

Odesk which reports it’s workers earning some $23 Million in one month, recently projected that online workers may earn a total of $1 Billion in 2012.

https://www.odesk.com/info/press/releases/odesk_record_num_of_jobs_and_contractors/

Elance gives a nicely detailed report on their worker earnings, including a ranking of most in demand skills.

There are also micro task sites that pay small change for a few minutes work, popular with 3rd world countries, some in the U.S. do them instead of crossword puzzles, the original was created by Amazon, the online store to ‘automate’ tasks a computer couldn’t do, like pick the better of 2 pictures, they named mturk.com after the 18th century Mechanical Turk chess playing machine that had a man hidden inside, shortTask and microworkers have similar micro tasks, some individual jobs are a bit shady, like signing up for product trials, doing surveys, but you get to choose which tasks to perform.

When TSHTF will you help your neighbor and politics/religion be damned?

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Emergencies are coming, on a seriously massive international scale. When the feces comes down, when the power’s out, you’re looking at your pantry shelves and wishing you had more firewood, [not to mention more money!] will you shuck all the politics, all the sectarian Christian/Muslim religious nonsense, all the Democrats vs Republican nonsense, etc and grit your teeth, stop your car or leave your house, go out in the rain and help that fellow stuck in the mud or the snow? Will you feed the person living in the house across the street or on the street (uh, do you have any food in your car?…) who you don’t know very well and the idiot doesn’t have any food? Will you pick up hitchhikers when you’re looking at your own gas gauge?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_S._Thompson

famously said "when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro".
Excellent line, and true, but us average "only just a little weird" guys, will we shuck our fears, take a chance, and gain Karma points by helping the next guy? You religious folks; does your faith enable you to Use The Force and put your ass on the line to help someone? Do you use it?

And what about ordinary life, before TSHTF? Do you do this today, or do you figure AAA or some government agency will handle the problem so you can stay on your phone and drive right by?

http://www.survivalpodcast.net/

When TSHTF, no-one around here will care about religion or politics.
They don’t care now, why would they then?
Life will be as it always is. If your barn burns down, you fix it, and don’t expect any help, unless you pay them.
The people are friendly, they just stay to themselves. A person could have 10 sex slaves, and the farm next to them would never know it, because the people they never visited their neighbor.

Lyrics:

Intro (spoken)

Yo man…
Yo I know you see me here dude!!
I’ve been waiting here like 10 minutes, man!
No, no no… this is MY parking space man.
What you need to do is put your little hybrid in reverse,
And go out the way you came in.
WHAT?!?!
Yo its about to get REAL in the Whole Foods parking lot man…

Chorus (with feeling)

It’s getting’ REAL in the Whole Foods Parking Lot
I got my STEEL and you know it gets sparked a lot
Im on my grind homie… It’s on my mind homie!
These fools with clip boards are lookin’ at me like they know me!

It’s getting’ REAL in the Whole Foods Parking Lot
You know the DEAL with the little shopping carts they got…
Check out what I say, it happens every day…
It’s how we LIVE on the west side of LA!!

Verse 1

… Im ridin’ slow in my Prius…
all leather, tinted windows… you cant see us!!
Everybody’s trying to park, you can feel the tension
I’m in electric mode… can’t even hear the engine (Shhhhhhh)

Just then I saw a spot open up,
My timings perfect… Im creepin’ up…
But then this other dude tried to steal it going the wrong way
Yo man, I’ve had a LONG DAY!

Chorus
(same as before)

Verse 2

Now I’m on this inside, looking at my list
Organic chicken, Kale Salad and a Lemon Twist.
Some girl in yoga pants is lookin at me funny
I’m just trying to find a decent Pinot Noir for under twenty!

Then I take it to the cheese counter, Humboldt Fog?
We just ran out sir! Really Dog?
Take it easy man, I try to calm myself…
I’ve been on edge ever since they took Kombucha off the shelf…

Chorus

(same as before)

Verse 3

This Busters on his iPhone talking to his friends,
Picking up some cayenne pepper for his master cleanse.
You’re the most annoying dude I’ve ever SEEN brah…
Could you PLEASE move? You’re RIGHT in front of the Quinoa.

Damn, I’m about to check out.
Pay my 80 bucks for 6 things and get the heck out.
The express lane is moving hella slow…
Man, these fools don’t know… that is getting REAL….

Chorus
(same as before)

Lyrics:
What I like about cheese,
is that you can put it on veggies,
and it tastes,
Mmm mmm so good
[Cat]
(Yeah!)

I like to talk about food,
‘Cuz it’s my favorite thing to do,
Every treat from yellow to blue,
red and green, so lets all sing!

[Chorus]
Tell me all about your Favorite Foods,
[Robbie]
(Mine is pizza!)
[Jade]
And I like hamburgers, too.
[Jade and Andre]
I’ll eat ice-cream cake,
till my tummy aches
But then here’s what I’ll do,
Here is what I’ll do,
Share some of mine with you.
(Yummy, yummy,)
(Ooohh, in my tummy)
(Ooohh, yummy yummy.)
All of my favorite foods
(Yummy, yummy)
(Ooohh, in my tummy)
(Ooohh, yummy yummy.)

Well, I like noodles in a bowl,
Chicken nuggets make me lose control,
‘Cause they taste
Mmm, mmm, so good
[Cat]
(Yeah!)

[Chorus]
