Is it rude to be on your cell phones when you are checking out or at a counter to get something like deli food?

Is it rude to be on your cell phone when you are talking to someone else or at a dinner table and it goes for texting too? Yes, I know that it is dangerous to be on cell phone when driving.

Yes.

It is rude when you are with somebody else because if you are taking the time to be face-to-face with somebody, then you should actually be with that person and not preoccupied with somebody else on your phone.

And it’s rude while checking out both because you are basically ignoring the checker and because you are distracted from paying attention to the transaction which is an irritant to those who are patiently waiting behind you for their turn to check out.

No, at least I don’t think so. You’re on the phone dealing with something important.

Yes. That person deserves your attention and it is rude to be talking to someone else.

Yes, cell phone usage while checking out, talking to someone else or at the dinner table should be avoided except if it’s an emergency. It is considered impolite to the person(s) in your company at the time.

If you have an important call or maybe have had trouble reaching someone for an urgent reason and they happen to call during one of these instances, you can say something such as "Please excuse me, but I really need to take this call". Otherwise, it can wait until later (includes texting).
