What is bluetooth capability with regards to GPS systems?

There are 2 types of units that have both Bluetooth and GPS. First is PND (Portable Navigation Devices) with Bluetooth. These are basically GPS receivers with LCD display and map navigation for turn by turn directions. Bluetooth is added so that the speaker of the PND can be used to answer your mobile calls. It thus is used as a hands-free mobile phone device plus a map navigation device. The map navigation also has Points-of-Interest (POI) where you can find things like restaurants and the database in the map has the phone number of the POI. You then use the LCD touch screen interface to automatically dial the number on the map database by using the Bluetooth to your mobile phone.

The second type of unit is a GPS receiver with Bluetooth data connection to a smartphone or PC. The map navigation software is running on the smartphone or PC and the GPS coordinate location is sent over Bluetooth to the smartphone or PC. The device can be very small; as small as a key-chain FOB, and does not have an LCD display.
